  • Flu Season 2017/18

    Update January 2018

    NHS England are warning that influenza is now circulating in our community and that laboratory confirmed flu cases are now rising. If you have not had your vaccination, please book in without delay.

    Those eligible for a free flu jab are:

    All patients aged 65 years and over (or those becoming 65 before 31 March 2018)

    Any patient less than 65 years who have a Chronic (long term) condition such as respiratory disease (Asthma, COPD or bronchitis), heart, kidney (at stage 3 or 4) or liver disease, neurological disease such as Parkinson's, stroke, TIA, motor neurone disease or learning disability

    Diabetic patients

    Asplenia or splenic dysfunction

    Weakened immune system due to disease (such as HIV/AIDS) or treatment such as cancer treatment

    Morbidly obese (BMI of 40+)

    All pregnant women (including those who become pregnant during this flu season)

    Patients who live in long stay residential care homes or other long stay care facilities where rapid spread is likely (this does not include university halls of residence)

    Patients who are in receipt of carer's allowance, or those who are the main carer of an older or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill

    Household contacts of immunocompromised patients, specifically individuals who expect to share living accommodation on most days over the winter

  • Accessible Information StandardDownload

    Accessible Information Standard

    The Accessible Information Standard is a new ‘information standard’ for implementation by all organisations that provide NHS or adult social care.  The Standard aims to ensure that people who have a disability or sensory loss receive information that they can access and understand, for example in large print, braille or via email, and professional communication support if they need it, for example from a British Sign Language interpreter.   The Standard requires organisations that provide NHS or adult social care to:

    1. Ask people if they have any information or communication needs, and find out how to meet their needs.
    2. Record those needs clearly and in a set way.
    3. Highlight or flag the person’s file or notes so it is clear that they have information or communication needs and how to meet those needs.
    4. Share people’s information and communication needs with other providers of NHS and adult social care, when they have consent or permission to do so.
    5. Take steps to ensure that people receive information which they can access and understand, and receive communication support if they need it.

    Although not exhaustive, the standard is likely to apply to people who are blind and/or deaf, those who have some hearing or visual loss, and people with learning disabilities.

    Successful implementation of the Standard aims to lead to improved outcomes and experiences, and the provision of safer and more personalised care and services to those individuals who come within the Standard’s scope.

    At practice level we will be making sure that we amend our commonly used forms to ask patients if they have any special communication needs. We will then record any on the patient’s medical record so that anyone seeing the patient is aware that the patient may need assistance with communication.  We will make sure that all our forms are available in larger print for patients.


  • SystmOnline

    SystmOnline is a new and easy to use way in which patients can book their own appointments, order their repeat prescriptions and access part of their medical record online via our website.


    What's new?

    Patients can now access more of their medical records - just like online banking, patients can now look at their medical records on a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, using a website or an app.

    Parental access can be given for children under the age of 14. When a patient reaches 14, their account will automatically be disabled until they confirm they would like access to continue.


    We feel SystmOnline will in particular benefit busy patients, patients who wish to take care of things outside normal office hours and those who want to book an advance appointment online.
    Patients not on the internet can also benefit indirectly as a reduction in telephone calls should make the practice more accessible. 






  • Care Quality Commission (CQC)Download

    What is the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?

    The CQC are regulators for all Health & Social Care in England. They are an independent organisation and do not form part of the Government so they can speak up for people who use services.

    They check that people get good, safe health and social care and that it meets the rules set by the Government. This includes:

    * GP Surgeries

    * Hospitals

    * Dentists

    * Ambulances

    * Care homes

    * Home care services

    The CQC check services and if they do not meet the government standards then there are a number of things that they can do, which include:

    * Tell managers to quickly make a plan about how they will get better

    * Give a service a warning letter with a date they must improve by

    * Say a service cannot do certain jobs or offer certain services

    * Issue a fixed penalty

    * Take a service off the CQC list

    * Take a service to court

    Care Quality Commission (CQC) Inspection

    Staithe Surgery received a routine, scheduled inspection from the Care Quality Commission on 19th April 2016 which focused on the following questions:

    * Are services safe?

    * Are services effective?

    * Are services caring?

    * Are services responsive to people's needs?

    * Are services well-led?

    Staithe Surgery received an overall rating of 'GOOD'.

  • Choice of GP Practice

    Choice of GP Practice

    From 5 January 2015, all GP practices in England are free to register new patients who live outside their practice boundary area.

    This means that patients are able to join practices in more convenient locations, such as a practice near their work, closer to their child’s school or even re-join their existing practice when moving home.

    There are some important things you need to know when registering ‘out of area’ with us, such as:

    - These new arrangements are voluntary for GP practices and if we have no capacity at the time or feel it is not clinically appropriate or practical for you to be registered so far away from home then we can refuse your registration.

    - Because of the greater distance to your home, you will be registered under the agreement that we will not provide you with a home visit when you are not well enough to come to the practice yourself.

    - If your circumstances change and it is no longer clinically appropriate or practical for you to be registered away from home, we may ask you to consider registering with a practice closer to home where your care may be better provided at that time.

    - Should you become too ill to attend the surgery in person or we are unable to assist you over the telephone, you will need to contact the NHS 111 service who will direct you to the right service for your needs.

  • Publication of GP Earnings

    NHS England requires that the net earnings of doctors engaged in the practice are published, and the required disclosure is shown below. However it should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice, and should not be used to form any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparison with any other practice.

    All GP Practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average pay) for GPs working to deliver GP services to patients at each practice. 

    The average pay for GPs working at Staithe Surgery in the last financial year was £76, 021 before tax and National Insurance. This is for three full time GPs and three part time GPs.

  • NEW: More GP Appointments Released

    Throughout January, Staithe Surgery is working with NHS England to offer extra GP appointments. This is because we know that there are times you want to be able to see a GP at short notice. We also know that over winter lots of people have seasonal illnesses which require more than a pharmacy but don't need emergency treatment.

    The extra appointments are bookable on the day by ringing reception on the usual number (01692 582000).

    If you are not able to attend an appointment you have booked, for whatever reason, please let us know. We can offer that appointment to someone else that needs it.

  • Enhanced Summary Care Record (eSCR)Download

    The Summary Care Record (SCR) is an electronic record of important patient information created from GP medical records. It can be seen and used by authorised staff in other areas of the health and care system involved in your direct care. Your SCR is a short summary of your GP medical records (medication, allergy and adverse reaction information). This means they can give you better care if you need health care away from your usual doctor's surgery, such as in an emergency when on holiday, or when your surgery is closed or if visiting a pharmacy.


    You can also choose to have additional helpful information added to your SCR, creating an "Enhanced Summary Care Record". It can include the following:


    • Your long term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart problems or rare medical conditions. • Your relevant medical history such as clinical procedures that you have had, why you need a particular medicine, the care you are currently receiving and clinical advice to support your future care.


    • Your healthcare needs and personal preferences - You may have particular communication needs, a long term condition that needs to be managed in a particular way, or you may have made legal decisions or have preferences about your care that you would like to be known.


    • Immunisations - details of previous vaccinations, such as tetanus and routine childhood jabs.


    • Please note: specific sensitive information such as any fertility treatments, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy terminations or gender reassignment will not be included, unless you specifically ask for any of these items to be included.


    How will additional information help me?


    Essential details about your healthcare can be very difficult to remember, particularly if you are unwell. Having additional information in your SCR means that when you need healthcare, you will be helped to recall this vital information. This can further increase the quality of your care and empower you if you need some help to communicate your complex care needs.
